On October 17, 2005 HP announced the release of their Color LaserJet 3600 series, which included the 3600n and the 3600dn. Print speeds were OEM-rated at up to 17 pages per minute (ppm) for both black and color for both models.

The supplies set includes four color cartridges, with yields OEM-stated at up to 4,000 for color and 6,000 pages for black printing. The black cartridge is the same SKU as that used in the HP 3800 printer.

The basic design of the cartridges used in the 3600 series is similar, but not identical to that of those used in the HP 3500 and 3700 printers. Each toner cartridge features a direct-contact chip similar to that introduced in the HP 2600 in June 2005.
